On Behalf of | Feb 26, 2022 | Blog, Drug Charges |

Addiction can lead you to dark places in life, including an arrest on drug possession charges. Winding up in a police station after a night out is scary. How you behave there could make a difference in your future.

If you find yourself in this situation, try and remember the following.

Stay calm

It is easy to panic in a predicament like this. But one of the most important things you can do is remain calm. Follow the instructions of law enforcement officials. If you resist arrest, it could lead to further charges.

Call a lawyer

Drug charges could be life-changing. You will need legal help to navigate the waters. When in custody, you have the right to make one phone call. If you do not have a lawyer, call someone you trust and ask them to find one for you.

Know what to expect

At the police station, they will record your fingerprints and take your photo. This experience could take several hours. After processing, expect to wait for your initial hearing in a jail cell.

The first appearance hearing before a magistrate or judge will occur a day or two after the incident. The judge will set release conditions and your court date during this session. During this hearing, you may be on your own, so keep your composure. According to North Carolina law, defendants do not have a right to counsel at their initial appearance hearing.

With help, many people can move forward from drug offenses and overcome addiction.
