In Winston-Salem and across North Carolina, law enforcement is always seeking out potential drug violations and conducting investigations to put a stop to illegal activity. That can include large-scale task forces and long-term gathering of evidence. When there is an arrest, people who are accused of drug trafficking, possession of significant quantities of illegal drugs and other serious charges can face long prison sentences, fines and other harsh penalties. When arrested, knowing how to cobble together a defense is key.

Couple accused of selling vast amounts of drugs from their home

A 39-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested after a task force investigation into illegal drug sales. The task force had searched several residences based on the allegations. They reported that they found Xanax, cocaine, marijuana, THC cartridges, ecstasy, LSD, heroin and more. The street value of the drugs came to nearly $14,000. In addition, they found just shy of $29,200 in cash. Weapons and ammunition were also found. The man is facing felony cocaine trafficking. He also had a stolen vehicle and other stolen items. The woman is charged with keeping controlled substances in a dwelling or vehicle and other felony and misdemeanor charges.

Drug charges and the consequences can be life-changing

For some who are arrested on drug charges, they are simply in possession of a minor amount for their own use or have drug paraphernalia. Others have moderate amounts for street sales. Still others have a significant cache of drugs in a property they control. These allegations along with weapons charges can accumulate to major penalties if there is a conviction. There are many variables that will be factored in, but when a task force is conducting the investigation, it is likely that law enforcement and prosecutors will be aggressive in their tactics. Those who have been arrested should understand the need for legal protection.

Considering strategies to deal with drug charges

Often, people who are arrested on drug offenses are having drug issues themselves. It may be possible to consider alternatives to punishment as part of the case. Of course, there is always a chance that the person got caught up in a situation where their involvement in the drug operation was limited or they are innocent. There is also a chance that the investigation was flawed and the evidence that was accrued cannot be used in court. These are just some of the avenues available to combat drug charges. From the start, it is imperative to understand how to proceed. Having experienced assistance in crafting a defense is crucial.
